「 How Permafrost Hydrological Processes Affect Above Ground Vegetation Dynamics ?

Recent observed studies have shown that vegetation dynamics, including phenology (short term) and succession (long term), is highly related to seasonal soil freezing-melting hydrological processes over permafrost and seasonal frozen region e.g., in Siberia. As a result, it becomes a difficulty for modeling studies to simulate the vegetation dynamics coupled with soil moisture properly. In order to simulate those highly coupled interactions and to understand the vegetation dynamics which respond to the climate and soil hydrology inter-annual variation, a new dynamic vegetation model (DVM) has been developed. It is coupled with a frozen soil model (FSM) which comprehensively considers the soil seasonal hydrology processes. The coupled model successfully reproduces vegetation composition and forest dynamics corresponding with soil freeze-melt processes. The results suggest that winter precipitation and soil ice is indispensable factor to maintain current forest dominated vegetation at Siberia, while forest composition is determined by many other factors such as permafrost existence, fire and so on.
